What to expect
A crown is a ceramic, tooth-coloured, full-coverage restoration designed to reinforce and protect a tooth that has been weakened structurally due to large cavities, fillings, cracks, or trauma.
It is mainly a preventive procedure recommended to prevent tooth fracturing, reduce risk of recurrent decay, and improve the longevity of a tooth. It can be done for one tooth or multiple teeth and will look as natural as possible since its shape and colour will match the surrounding teeth. We find that most of our patients appreciate seeing their crown being milled and created in person and love the final product aesthetically and functionally.
The appointment starts by having the tooth numbed with anaesthetic to take away any sensitivity or discomfort. We then trim down the affected and weakened areas of the tooth to create space for it to be reinforced with the ceramics. A digital scan is then taken and the crown is designed using our CAD-CAM technology to fit exactly within the space and with how your teeth bite together. No messy impressions needed!
The crown is milled from our CEREC machine which turns the digital model into a strong ceramic tooth exterior that is permanently bonded and cemented onto your tooth. After the 2-hour appointment, you can walk out confident that your teeth are now stronger and more resilient.
We always take the time to make sure you know why this treatment option has been recommended for you. We use digital 3D scanning, high quality digital photography, and a non-judgemental or pressuring environment so you can rest assured that you’ve made the right decision.
Cost of the procedure
The investment in a crown is meant to increase the longevity of the tooth for the long term. We consider it a much stronger material with a substantially lower risk of decay around the restoration compared to regular fillings, and so the cost of a crown can range from approximately $1,200 to $1,400. Crowns are categorized as ‘major’ treatments under dental insurance benefit plans, meaning the reimbursement can vary. To ensure you are completely informed on costs with no surprises, we always give you a pre-authorized estimate of the cost of your crown before we book an appointment.
